Calvary Pentecostal Church — Cambridge, ON
Calvary Pentecostal Church retained Reinders + Law Ltd. to provide an aesthetic renovation of their Children’s Ministry area and develop their facility into a 24/7 venue for churchgoers and the community.
Project Overview
During this project, the church congregation was able to remain in their facility throughout construction without missing a single Sunday worship time.
Several important factors to the project’s success were flexibility by the church, phasing design developed by Reinders + Law Ltd., and willingness by the contractor to accommodate the church. These factors contributed to a smooth process and exceptional finished product.
Renovated Atrium Space
Calvary wanted to provide a one-stop opportunity for a newcomer to meet the Church family, while clearly demarcating the various ministry areas from the main entrance location.
An atrium was developed in the front foyer to provide a welcoming space to people entering the facility. This atrium was used to connect the seven different floor levels of the existing church facility.
Children’s Ministry Area & Indoor Playground
The Children’s Ministry area had a large playground designed inside their front window, looking onto one of the busiest streets in Cambridge.
This interactive and thematic children’s area provided a focal point, street appeal, and a destination for the local community, intended to distinguish Calvary from other churches in the area — it is often referred to as ‘the church with the large indoor playground in the front window’. This playground is open to the community for four mornings a week. It is used for community functions and birthday parties the remainder of the time.
Although the decision to add this children’s area was made after the initial design was completed, R+L were able to offer flexibility and adapt to the added complexity of the project. Based on the direction chosen for the children’s area, our team also redesigned the Youth Warehouse area and lead a team of volunteers in renovating it.
